Picnic

hotel, copenhagen

The tower/block form developed from a desire to create an iconic landmark (tower) for Kroyers Plads, whilst maintaining the regular finger-like building line that exists along the Strait (block).

The city’s identity as ‘The City of Towers’ derives from Copenhagen’s symbolic towered skyline; created over five centuries as an icon of Danish design.  The proposal takes a starting point in the historical Copenhagen tower which is made up of two basic principals; a base that relates to the urban space and life unfolding near the building, and a slim steeple that reaches towards the sky and becomes part of the skyline.  As such, the design grows out of the context with a starting point in the volumes and cornice heights of the neighbouring buildings.  From the surrounding cityscape, the hotel rises towards the sky.
